Are You Safe?

At Work

It is the responsibility of employers to provide a work environment that is safe and respectful.  If you are being harassed at work, feeling scared staying at work late, or worried about travelling to and from work, it is your employer's responsibility to work with you to find solutions.

  • Know Your Rights.  It is not ok for an employer, supervisor, manager or co-worker to make you feel threatened, ashamed or victimized, even if that person holds your job in their hands.  Any suspicious or uncomfortable behaviour should be reported to the human resources department, a superior working in the company, union representative, or police.

  • Make a Safety Plan for Going to and From Work.  Your employer should help you plan a safe way to get to and from work, perhaps by arranging carpools, or security escorts to vehicles and bus stops when working late into the night.  Try to avoid working or walking in isolated places for long periods of time.  If you are feeling unsafe on an elevator, press as many of the buttons for the floors as you can.
